Border Security | Harris supports Trump’s wall plan, however she has shifted construction to where she sees it makes sense. Her approach is more focused on technological solutions for border security like increased detection technology to fight fentanyl smuggling | Trump is aiming to complete the US-Mexico border wall if given a second term. During his first term, he oversaw 52 miles of border fencing. He plans to continue this effort if in office. |
Border Staff | Harris plans to hire an additional 1,500 Customs and Border Patrol agents to manage the border workload. | Trump plans to use existing law enforcement and military resources for border control. |
Asylum and Refugee Policies | Harris supports the bipartisan Senate proposal that would change the asylum system. The proposal seeks to raise the standard of asylum eligibility and require asylum applicants to establish “reasonable possibility” in their petition. This proposal would introduce a new “protection determination” which is a 6-month procedure conducted by asylum officers outside the court system. This aims to streamline the asylum process. | Trump’s policies aim to make it more difficult for individuals to seek asylum. One proposal, the “Migrant Protection Protocol” requires asylum applicants to wait in Mexico while their case is processed. Trump has also spoken about agreements with Central American countries to send asylum seekers to these countries to pursue their cases there. |
Legal Immigration and DACA | Harris is a strong advocate for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. In the Biden administration, she worked to ensure Dreamers have access to affordable healthcare. She advocates for Congress to pass protections for immigrants. | Trump’s proposal the “Build America Visa” would use a point-based system to determine who would receive a green card based on achievements and possible contributions to the U.S. |
Deportation | Harris has emphasized the need to change the cause of migrations by investing in Central America. Similar to Biden’s proposal, she aligns with a strategy to create and invest in legal avenues for immigration, including work visas and refugee resettlement to decrease pressure on the U.S.-Mexico border. Harris opposes mass deportation, however she has taken a more central approach to border security issues. | Trump’s proposal aims to be the largest deportation operation in American history. He proposes to use local police, military, and the National Guard to track and deport undocumented immigrants. To support this effort, he plans to redirect money to expand the capacity of the detention centers along the border. |
